　　About the programme

　　This degree will prepare you for a career in teaching. It will give you the skills to achieve positive and equitable outcomes for learners from priority student groups.

　　These groups are identified as learners who are Māori, Pacific Island, those with special needs, and those from low socio-economic communities.

　　The programme includes a investigation where you will use research and evidence to investigate, inform and develop your professional knowledge and practice.

　　You will also gain an understanding of current issues and debates in education and an appreciation of their impact on schools, teachers and learners.

　　The MTchg(Primary) combines both campus-based and school-based teaching and learning, with much of the time spent in schools. You will be placed within a supportive network of schools to gain exposure to a range of priority learner groups and students.

　　This extensive time spent in schools aims to better enable you to make the links between theory and practice as you learn and practise concurrently in an authentic and supportive setting.

　　You will benefit from receiving timely, constructively critical and targeted feedback/feed forward on your learning and development.

　　Entry and selection criteria includes:

　　A bachelors degree, or higher qualification, with an average grade of B or higher. (Note: this degree can be in any discipline or subject area)

　　A satisfactory Police check

　　Interviews, efficacy assessments and referee statements to establish suitability and disposition for teaching

　　IELTS score of 7.5 or greater (no less than 7 in each band) for applicants who have English as an Additional Language.

　　Career opportunities

　　You will graduate with a qualification that allows you to teach Year 1 to Year 8 students in primary, middle and intermediate schools (typically age five to 13-year-olds). This masters degree will make you eligible for a higher starting salary than what a bachelors degree or graduate diploma enables.

　　Your study and practical experience in enhancing the achievement of learners in priority student groups will be a key asset when demonstrating your ability to work effectively with diverse learners.

　　This degree can also lead to other work opportunities related to education, diverse learner groups, policy and advocacy.

　　The knowledge gained in conducting an investigation and the use of research and evidence will give you the base to conduct further research if you choose to. The degree is also a pathway to doctoral research (criteria apply).
